i have found love

Well, another love. A new love. I have a lot of loves, including a cat we prefer to call Lovebug Bugbug, yet I digress.

A week plus ago, before i fell into the abyss, it was my co-worker Sheila’s birthday. I took this as the perfect excuse to run out and get gum paste and fondant and all the tools and set to work. The end result was some purple roses and a small not-quite-perfect white fondant round with a pink trim and purple forget-me-nots on the seam. I wasn’t smart enough to take a picture beforehand, so here’s what it looked like after the gals had had at it already:

I used my own “Double-the-Something-Something” recipe for the chocolate cake, and then whipped up homemade chocolate buddacream a la Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. The purple roses and leaves were made of gum paste. Not bad for my first whack at it, if I do say so myself.

Lucky for me, Halloween quickly followed. My real ambition was to make a carved jack-o-lantern cake for the pumpkin carving contest at work (hello prize$, haha) but things didn’t work out that way. Layering two measly layers, I realized I’d need a lot more cake, and a lot would be carved away. Then covering it with fondant… So I nixed that. Instead I made three little individual pumpkins for the three managers in my department:

And a Jack-Mutates-with-Sally type pumkinish cake with stitches. The real reason he’s not orange is because kneading that much fondant into an even shade of orange would have made my arms fall off. I went to bed at 2:30a that night!
